Shire Hall RFC 43 v 20 Farnham Royal RFC
Shire Hall overcame Farnham Royal 43-20 to secure a bonus point victory in their most complete performance of the season so far.
Having kick-started their season with a last minute win away to Faringdon last week Shire Hall picked up where they left off with Rhys Stewart scoring out wide early on for an unconverted try. Farnham Royal came with a big forward pack and after a series of lineouts near the Shire Hall line they finally found a way through to tie the score (5-5).
Rhys Stewart added a penalty before Rhys Thomas ran in under the posts to give a half time lead of 15-5. The final action of the half saw Shire Hall held up over the Farnham Royal line and at half time it was acknowledged that the lead probably should have been greater.
The second half saw Shire Hall unload their bench onto the pitch with all coming on having a positive influence – whilst it was noticeable that the big Farnham Royal pack was beginning to tire. A well worked backs try resulted with Lenny Pitt muscling his way over under the posts for Shire Hall’s 3rd try which was followed by a charge down and gather by Man of the Match Steph Margot to secure the try bonus point.
Farnham Royal hit back with a try of their own and a delightful drop goal before Number 8 Chris Wiseman swallow dived in in the corner (earning himself DOTD) for Shire Hall’s fifth try following a neat offload from Rhys Stewart. A final try from Matt Margot, who’s almost impossible to stop from 5 metres out, brought the score to 43-13, before Farnham Royal scored with the final play, just reward for their perseverance.
A solid win for Shire Hall who travel to Harwell next weekend looking to make it three wins from three.
