The King Is Dead, Long Live The King. Kicking Cup 2018 Result

On a coldish April evening (although warmer than last year), 12 pretend kickers assembled to contest the Annual Kicking Cup. Only two former winners were in attendance – the illustrious Margot brothers. After the first round, it was clear that in the Jellicoe brothers, Young Will ( the prop) was the better kicker. Birchy turned up late again but this year did actually compete in kit unlike last year when he attempted the kicks in his suit. The big surprise of players reaching Round 2 was Neil. I believe this was the first time he had ever reached this stage and for those of you who witnessed his kicking in the Wallingford game a few years back, somewhat of a revelation! Watch the video in the gallery for Neil’s style.

After Round 2, only Matt Margot (last year’s winner) and Rhys Stewart (current main 1st XV kicker) were left in. The ball was placed on the half way line and Maggot goes first. A good effort but it goes wide! No pressure on Rhys then – if he misses, he loses. Lands it and he is the champion. Your reporter will tell you when he can tell by the sound if a kick is hit well and the sound we heard was sweet. Through the posts it sailed and I believe this was the longest kick that Rhys had ever landed.

So congratulations to this year’s winner- RHYS STEWART
