Shire Hall 72 Winslow 5 – 15th September 2018 – Match Report

Shire Hall faced Winslow on Saturday not sure what to expect from the league new boys having last played them 5 years previously.

The tone was set early on with the Shire Hall scrum sending the Winslow scrum forced into fast retreat which would ultimately culminate in Matt Margot crashing over from the base after 5 minutes. The next 10 minutes proved the most competitive of the game with scramble Shire Hall defence keeping Winslow out on a couple of occasions. However, after Shire Hall scored their second on the 20 minute, this time from a 5 metre line out the rest of the game was one way traffic. Three more tries followed in quick succession as the backs profited from the forwards work up front with three further scores out wide leading to a half time score of 31-0.

Unlike in previous weeks Shire Hall turned up for the second half with a further six tries following with even Sam Watkins crossing the line despite his best efforts not too. Tries were shared across the backs and forwards with both Neil Evans and Alex Webb grabbing a brace. Winslow to their credit scored a consolation late in second half following series of pick and goes. Final score 72-5.

Ollie Jarrett was named man of the match following numerous strong carries and making significant yardage off nearly every restart he received.

Next week Shire Hall face relegated Abingdon who started their campaign with an impressive 39-0 away win at Aldermaston.

Captain Matt Margot’s Comments:

“We were clinical today against a new opposition to the league; we went into the game with no idea of what to expect from Winslow. The team remained composed throughout the game and kept playing to the game plan allowing us to run in a number of tries. This performance sets us up nicely going into a tougher run of games.”
